Step into the Tom and Mae Bahan Library at Sherman College and you can explore one of the most comprehensive collections of chiropractic books in the southeast U.S. Browse shelves packed with books on chiropractic, biology, and even business practices. Sherman’s website offers students entrance to 10,000 open-access scientific journals, 400,000+ records on chiropractic, and full-text access to more than 60 databases and resources.
Still, can’t find what you’re seeking?
Sherman’s inter-library loan services link students to more than 5,000 other libraries across the globe. While those resources are impressive in their own right, one of the big showstoppers for students is still Sherman’s prized collection of “Green Books.”.
What are the Green Books?
What are the famed Green Books of chiropractic? They can actually be a bit hard to define. To start with, not all of the green books are green or all written by the same author. What many chiropractors agree on is that these books – first published between 1906 and 1961 – are among the early foundations of chiropractic science, art, and philosophy.
The Story Behind Early Chiropractic Research and the Publication of the Green Books
When D.D. Palmer performed the first chiropractic adjustment in 1895, he quickly became fascinated by this new non-invasive approach to healthcare. D.D. Palmer began extensively researching the science behind chiropractic and documented many of his early insights.
Those early writings were published in books with green binding – which is where these historical volumes get their name.
Although D.D. Palmer wrote some of the foundational green books, his son B.J. Palmer actually wrote the majority of them. He continued his father’s research as the philosophy and science of chiropractic evolved throughout the twentieth century.
Other green books were written by prominent faculty members of the Palmer School and other Palmer family members, with B.J.‘s blessing.
Top Green Books to Read While You Complete Your Chiropractic Degree
In total, there are 41 official green books. If you don’t have time to read all 41 volumes, take a look at some of the most influential ones to provide valuable context to your studies.
The Palmer father-son team wrote the first of the green books. It’s titled “The Science of Chiropractic: Its Principles and Adjustments” and discusses the differences between chiropractic and osteopathy during the early days of chiropractic when the public often confused the two.
If the history of chiropractic piques your interest, read the 1961 green book “The Glory of Going On”, detailing the story of B.J. Palmer’s chiropractic career and legacy. Alternately, if you’d rather read early accounts of chiropractic adjustments in B.J. Palmer’s own words, read volume 18: “The Subluxation Specific – The Adjustment Specific.”
