4 Career Paths for Students Completing their Chiropractic Degree
[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat” background_size=”initial” _builder_version=”3.0.101″ background_layout=”light”]
This is an exciting time to launch a career in chiropractic.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of chiropractors is projected to grow 17 percent from 2014 to 2024, compared to 7 percent, which is the average for all occupations.
Demand for chiropractors is spurred on by an increased understanding of, natural healthcare solutions that focus on prevention and whole-body wellness. A growing body of clinical evidence in support of chiropractic has added to this awareness, inspiring students to pursue Doctors of Chiropractic, and expanding the market for new grads.
Considering enrolling in a chiropractic program, or nearing the end of your degree? Here are four exciting career paths to consider.
Start Your Own Chiropractic Practice
Many students dream of owning their own practice after graduating from chiropractic college. They are drawn to the freedom of being their own boss, growing their own business, and the opportunity to focus on whatever area of chiropractic they find fulfilling.
Some grads will operate clinics out of their own homes for greatest convenience. Others will join a sports team and travel across the globe. Some will choose to tailor their practice toward infants, the elderly, and athletes—or go the traditional route and work with patients of all ages and backgrounds. The sky’s the limit for chiropractic entrepreneurs.
Join an Established Clinic as a Doctor of Chiropractic
A new graduate of doctor of chiropractic may opt to join an established clinic rather than building a practice from scratch. Advantages of this path include gaining experience working with a broad range of patients and less time spent on business tasks like marketing and accounting.
Some grads may start out working with a team of other healthcare professionals, learning the ropes and deciding on an area of specialty, before launching their own private practices.
Specialize in Animal Chiropractic
Like humans, animals experience vertebral subluxations and can benefit from chiropractic care. Since the inception of the American Veterinary Chiropractic Association (AVCA) in 1986, animal adjusting is increasingly recognized as helpful in maintaining vitality and wellness for dogs, horses, and other animals.
Recent Sherman College alumna Natasha Jaskiewicz, D.C., has made animal chiropractic the focus of her mobile, private practice. She travels the globe working with horse and rider teams, and dogs that compete at an international level.
Animal adjustment has grown so popular that Sherman College regularly hosts animal adjusting with industry experts like Drs. Jay Komarek and Petra Sullwold.
Advance Chiropractic Awareness as an Educator
An important part of earning a chiropractic degree is conducting research, analyzing data, and sharing new viewpoints. After graduation, the focus on education and awareness continues as doctors of chiropractic help patients understand chiropractic philosophy, and take part in ongoing professional development.
Some graduates view education and research as crucial to the success of chiropractic, and after practicing for a few years, transition into academic roles. Many continue to maintain a small private practice as they develop their academic careers.
Several Sherman College graduates have followed this path, leading them full circle, right back to Sherman! Recent alumni additions to the Sherman team include:
- Rebecca Hall, D.C. (class of 2006), joined the Sherman College faculty as assistant case doctor in the Health Center in December 2015
- Jillian Kersh, D.C. (class of 2009), accepted the position of Director of Continuing Education at Sherman College last year and coordinates seminars and programs for chiropractic licensure and learning
- Princess Porter-Fowler, D.C. (class of 2001), joined the Sherman College faculty as an instructor in clinical sciences, also in 2015
- Brian Dooley, D.C., A.C.P. (class of 2005), returned to the college in 2014 as a health center case doctor but now teaches several courses and manages the college’s thriving Practice Success Program.
As educators and researchers, Doctors of Chiropractic have a unique opportunity to influence the next generation of practitioners and be inspired by each new cohort of dedicated new students.
