Lim, Bondar Receive Dr. Kelvin Ng Scholarship for International Students
Sherman College graduate Dr. Kelvin Ng, ’09, of Singapore knows what it’s like to attend graduate school in a country halfway around the world. That’s one reason, as an active Reach Out And Recruit (ROAR) member, he chooses to support and encourage prospective students… and make their experience away from home a little easier.
The Dr. Kelvin Ng Scholarship for International Students offers $1,000 to international students who are not U.S. citizens and who are unable to qualify for federal student aid due to citizenship in another country. Recipients must maintain at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA and must intend to return to their country of residence upon graduation from Sherman College of Chiropractic and must submit an essay detailing how they will contribute to their communities when they return home as a doctor of chiropractic upon graduation from Sherman College. Recent scholarship recipients include Sanaz Bondar of Iran and Hui Zhen Lim of Singapore, and Dr. Ng anticipates awarding several more scholarships in the future.
Lim, the inaugural recipient of the Dr. Kelvin Ng Scholarship, said she is thankful for the support of an international colleague while she pursues her degree. “It is especially meaningful to me because Dr. Ng was my chiropractor in Singapore, and he was also the one who recommended me to attend Sherman,” she explained. “Without his guidance and mentorship, I would not be [at] Sherman today, much less made it almost past the halfway mark!”
Bondar agrees. “Dr. Kevin Ng is making a big difference in student lives by offering financial help to international students who are unable to get government loans,” she explains. “The fact that he cares about students even though he is not a student anymore himself shows a lot about his mission to help people in any way possible.”
Lim also said the scholarship for international students goes a long way easing the financial burden that comes with the leap to study abroad, and it also keeps her focused on her career goals. “Dr. Ng had us envision how we would contribute to our communities upon graduation,” she said. “As we reflect on our journeys as DCs2B, it reminds us of what we are working so hard toward, and more importantly, why we do what we do. His thoughtful scholarship serves as an encouragement, and it truly warms our hearts to know that there are Sherman alumni looking out for us, miles from home.”
