The Sherman College family is deeply saddened by the loss of Sarah Lou Bush on August 15. Bush was a dedicated Sherman College employee from 1984-2011, helping raise funds in the Alumni Office and making countless phone calls to garner college support. She was 92 years young. Sherman College founder and first president Dr. Thom Gelardi said Bush would be remembered fondly for her loyalty to the college as well as her sense of humor. “Sarah served the Sherman family well for many years,” he said. “There is a lot to remember and love about Sarah. She had a great sense of humor, and many of us enjoyed retelling her intentionally direct and humorous manner of speaking. I remember with great appreciation her loyalty and steadfastness during some of Sherman’s most difficult days. She was the same, happy, serving person in any kind of weather. She was one of the great joys of the Sherman experience.”
Many Sherman alumni shared their memories of Bush on the college’s Facebook page. Dr. Ken Hillman, ’79, remembered Sarah’s classic Southern charm and her accent. “My name became ‘Kin,’” he shared. “But her best attribute was her love of us, Sherman and chiropractic. We all loved her and we all carry a little smile when remembering Sarah Lou Bush.”
Dr. Rochelle Davis Delain, ’92, said Sarah was “one of the most unforgettable human beings at Sherman during my years there as a student,” and Dr. Alice Hardin, ’03, referred to her as “a fixture of happiness at Sherman.”
Others shared their memories of her compassion. “She was a great lady, always friendly and very helpful,” said Dr. Dexter DiMarco, ’85. “She knew all the problems students had and she knew how to solve them. [She was] a true friend who put a troubled student at ease.”
Dr. Cecile Bruhn, ’96, agreed. “There are a handful of people who will forever be linked to my Sherman experience. Sarah was one of them.”
