Sherman College of Chiropractic honored alumni, chiropractors, and supporters during its 51st Lyceum event, a homecoming and continuing education event attended by hundreds throughout the U.S. and internationally. Lyceum is held annually for three days, consisting of seminars, special events, and other programs. Over 800 individuals participated in this year’s event, held May 3-5 on the Sherman campus in Spartanburg. The college is proud to announce recipients of Sherman’s 13 prestigious Lyceum awards.
USC Upstate Chancellor Bennie L. Harris, Ph.D., is the recipient of the 2024 Sherman College of Chiropractic Community Champion Award.
The Community Champion Award recognizes the leadership of an individual, service provider, educator, or community-minded group demonstrating exemplary efforts in a project advancing Sherman College.
Dr. Harris became the fifth chancellor of the University of South Carolina Upstate on July 1, 2021. A native of the Mississippi Delta farming community of Deeson, Chancellor Harris is deeply committed to inspiring and developing young people to change the world through higher education.
With a background in industrial engineering and strategic marketing, Chancellor Harris holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Mississippi State University, a Master of Business Administration from Washington State University, and a Ph.D. from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
Prior to his appointment at USC Upstate, Chancellor Harris held significant leadership roles at various institutions, including Morehouse School of Medicine, where he served as Senior Vice President for Institutional Advancement.
At USC Upstate, Chancellor Harris has implemented transformative initiatives to enhance student success and regional impact. Notably, he spearheaded the Reimagine Upstate Summit and launched the Spartanburg Promise Scholarship program, offering talented high school seniors the opportunity to earn their degrees debt-free.
Under Chancellor Harris’ leadership, USC Upstate has undergone a rebranding campaign, inviting the community to “Reach Greater Heights” and fostering a culture of innovation and excellence.
Beyond his role at USC Upstate, Chancellor Harris is actively involved in civic organizations, serving on boards such as the Spartanburg Academic Movement and the United Way of the Piedmont.
