Five of Sherman College’s key marketing and communications projects have been recognized at the national level, taking home second, third and honorable mention prizes in the National Federation of Press Women (NFPW) Communications Contest. Before advancing to the national contest, an annual competition that encourages and rewards excellence in communication, the entries won top honors in Media Women of South Carolina’s statewide contest.

Two entries earned second place in the nation, including the college’s enewsletter, Sherman Shares, and a speech written for the American Black Chiropractic Association annual conference. The college’s alumni magazine took home third place for page design. Receiving honorable mentions were a personality profile article on the late Eric Bourg and a print ad for the college’s Chiropractic Health Center.

Vice President for Institutional Advancement and Public Relations Ohmar T. Land, D.M., was pleased to see the college’s work honored for the second consecutive year. “Karen’s ability to continue her award-winning work from last year demonstrates her commitment to innovation,” he said. “Having this work recognized on a national level yet another year confirms that the college is moving in the right direction with its evolving communication and branding efforts.”

The state judge who advanced the winning entries to the national contest had high praise, citing the appeal of printed publications in their relative categories as well as the power of the spoken word in the speech category. “The emotion inherent in this speech makes it a cut above many others,” the judge commented regarding a presidential speech for ABCA. “This is both authentic and inspiring – well done!”

The judge declared the college’s second-place enewsletter, Sherman Shares, as “one email I think I’d actually read.” In addition, she described the college’s advertisement for Spartanburg Little Theatre event programs as “young and modern” and shared that “with a simple visual, [it] dispels some antiquated ideas of chiropractic.”

This is not the Public Relations Office’s first time receiving honors from MWSC or NFPW. Last year, the college had three first-place and one second-place awards in the state competition, and its “Dreams Coming True” capital fundraising project was recognized as an honorable mention at the national level. In 2014, a print piece for prospective students won first place in the nation, and in 2013, two of the college’s prospective student print pieces received second-place national awards.
