Chiropractic students spend approximately 4,600 hours learning the science, art, and philosophy of chiropractic in the classroom, but how do they develop the soft skills needed in practice if they're always studying? At Sherman College, often that's through joining a student organization or club.
Each quarter, Chiropractic Student Government hosts Club Day - a time for organizations to showcase what they're about and how they can help fellow students reach their desired goals. At the event, we spoke with a Sherman College Student Ambassador, Kelsie Costello, and asked why she recommends that students participate in clubs. For her, "not only is it an additional avenue to learn more about the aspects of the chiropractic world, but also to form relationships with students outside your class." Additionally, Kelsie has had the opportunity to network with chiropractors in the field via several of her clubs and finds that "learning from guest speakers has helped me to envision what life will be like after graduation."

At Sherman College, we have a saying - that we're obsessed with student success. We make it a priority to provide our students with the best instructors, facilities, and experiences possible while they're on campus. But what happens when they're on break, looking for an associateship, or opening a practice? This gap is where mentors play a pivotal role - and we need your help! |

We caught up with Dr. James Craft, '18, a member of our Reach Out and Recruit (ROAR) program, who recently referred his mentee, Abigail, to Sherman College, to discuss why he loves being a mentor and he stated, "it's incredibly enlightening to see a student make a decision to become who they are called to be." He went on to say that the most rewarding aspect for him is in "helping someone find their purpose in life," and the research couldn't agree more. Not only does mentorship provide fulfillment, but it also expands your network, develops communication skills, encourages innovation, and allows for someone to provide feedback for your personal growth.

Abigail considers herself lucky. She feels that "she has someone in [her] corner who can answer questions about business, chiropractic, and classes." What we love most is that through mentorship, she has a trusted source who has been through the journey, and "it helps keep her focused and determined to achieve [her] goals."
The mentor-mentee relationship can be life-changing for both parties and through our ROAR program, we offer tips for docs as they seek to help future chiropractors. |
